Marike wanted to study optometry or pharmacy, but the delay in getting acceptance caused her to wonder how she’d pass the year ahead.

One day, her sister was doing her nails and chatting in the salon, and she decided to study hairdressing – but only for one year.

Although her mom Erica owned Erica’s Hair Boutique, Marike never gave it a thought and was never pressured to become a hairdresser. But she always wanted to be like her mom without knowing what that meant.

“I did some research and came across Stellenbosch Hair Academy, and after checking it out my decision was made. I graduated with an international hairdressing qualification”.

Marike’s studies did not stop there.

Although working fulltime at Erica’s Hair Boutique, she completed a 3-year Bachelor of Science degree through Unisa.

“I met my husband when studying hairdressing and I was so scared the first time I cut his hair! Throughout my years of studying, he was so patient and always respected the time I needed for my studies. I am forever thankful. Now, we have more time to ourselves, and we love visiting wine farms in the area, each time visiting a new one.”

Marike has no clear answer as to why she chose hairdressing as a career. But what she does know is that she love’s making people feel beautiful, the conversations, the peoples’ smiles, and just giving value to those who sit in her chair.
